The Old Town is a veritable walk-through, open air museum. From the Venetian built fortifying walls to the Roman baths, every ethnic ruling group left a mark that stands to this. The Cathedral of St. Nicholas was built in the fourteenth century and was later converted to, and remains to this day, the Lala Mustapha Pasa Mosque. The Great Citadel made an appearance in Shakespeare’s Othello and is now referred to as Othello’s Tower.

The local restaurants specialise in kebabs, mezze and thick Turkish coffee. El Kaz and Cyprus House are two well-known bars and taverns. D&B, La Fortuna and Affix Bistro are highly recommended café-bars.

The International Famagusta Culture and Arts Festival that began is 1995 has been running almost every year. The programme includes various music concerts and dance performances and is held in the Salamis Antique Theatre.

The town of Enkomi and Salamis are only a short drive from Famagusta.
