Kingston, the largest city and the capital of Jamaica, is located on the south-eastern coast of the island. It is the seventh largest natural harbour in the world and has a bustling port, exporting sugar, rum and bananas. It has a population of 7,50,000 inhabitants.
Kingston, an ancient city founded in 1692 by the British, flourished as a port for slave-traders in the eighteenth century. However, hardly any visible traces of its colourful history are left in the city, primarily due to a series of natural disasters during the seventeenth century.
The city is characterised by a tropical climate. It stays warm and sunny almost all through the year, with the average temperature staying around 25°C. It rains the most during the months of May–June and September October.
