Surface: The total land area of Cuba is around 110,860 sq km.

Population:  The population of Cuba is around 11,390,000. Mulattos comprise 51% of the population, followed by Caucasians, Africans and the Chinese.

System of government: The Republic of Cuba is a communist state.

Capital: Havana, with a population of around 2,400,000 inhabitants, is the capital city.

Religion: Cuba is traditionally a Catholic country. Protestants, Jews and Santeria are also present.

Official Language: The official language is Spanish. English and French are also spoken.

Climate: Cuba has a tropical climate moderated by trade winds. The country is, however, prone to hurricanes.

Units of measure and electricity: Cuba follows the metric system of measurement and the official electricity unit is 110/220V, 60 Hz.

Time Zone: The standard time is GMT – 5.

Currency: Cuban Peso (CUP) and the convertible Peso (CUC).

Travel documents required: Passports and visas or tourist cards are necessary for travel to Cuba.
Economy

Cuba makes its money mainly from its nickel and cobalt production. The rapidly growing tourism industry is another major source of income for Cuba. Cuba exports nickel, sugar, tobacco, medical products and skilled labour to Netherlands, China and Canada.

The average cost of living is relatively low. Travelling by bus is the cheapest option. Official taxis are relatively expensive, and so, it is a better idea to use rental cars. Car rentals start from CUC 65 a day.
