Lampang lacks the bustling tourist crowd of the neighbouring Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai tourist cities, but it does have a plethora of attractions to offer. The world’s only baby elephant training school can be found here.

The city was ruled by the Burmese for 200 years, and this influence can be found in the temples of downtown Lampang like the fifteenth-century Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, which is one of the oldest wooden buildings in Thailand and houses some excellent murals.

On the western banks of the Wang River you can find the Wat Phra Kaeo Don Tao, which used to be the home of the renowned Emerald Buddha. An impressive array of twenty pagodas can be found at the Wat Phra That Chedi Sao, the Temple of Twenty Chedis.

You can also take a ride on the famous horse carriages of Lampang or relax at the Chae Son National Park, with its hot springs and large waterfalls. Souvenirs of the city can include handmade elephant dung paper and art work.
