Tartus is a city on the coast of Syria. The city is lies on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It is situated roughly at a distance of 90 km from Homs and 251 km from Damascus. The city is also the capital of the Tartus Governorate. The city is bounded by the Alawite Mountains to the east.
Due to its location, Tartus experiences a typically Mediterranean climate. Hence, it has a moderate climate with short winter months. In fact, Tartus is famous for its mild weather and high precipitation. The average temperature ranges between 34°C to 2°C.
Tartus has approximately 93,060 inhabitants, where majority is ethnic Levantine. Being a port city, Tartus is one of the important economic centres of Syria. The city features a Soviet-era naval base, which is still maintained and staffed by the Russians.
