Lattakia is the most important seaport of Syria in the Mediterranean. It is located 186 km south-west of Aleppo and also serves as the capital of Lattakia governorate.
Having moderate climate, the city of Lattakia has hot, dry summers and mild cold winters. The average annual temperature in the city ranges from 36°C (highest) to 0°C (lowest).
Lattakia has an approximate population of 544,000 individuals. The city is often referred to as the ‘Seagate to the Mediterranean’. The city is the trading centre for the surrounding agricultural region and is also noted for tobacco, which is grown nearby. Its chief exports are cotton, fruit and tobacco.
Lattakia was one of the live cities built by Salugos Nikator in the second century BC. He named this city after his mother, Laudetia.
