Kaesong is a city in the North Hwanghae Province in North Korea. Located near the Kaesong Industrial Region, the city is home to a populace of around 150,000 inhabitants. The city has a rich cultural heritage and is a major commercial centre of the country. It is a chief centre of exports as well as a tourist resort.
Kaesong has a temperate climate with hot summers and cold winters. The annual rainfall is mostly concentrated in the months of summer. The monsoon season is very short and is locally known as ‘changma’.
The city of Kaesong came under the control of North Korea in 1951; this boosted the economic development of the city. Today, the city is a major trade centre involved in agriculture, textiles, jewels, and the export of ginseng.
