Mandalay offers visitors various interesting historical sites coupled with traditional performances and vibrant shopping markets. The city is home to some ancient royal cities such as Amarapura, Mingun and Inwa, which make for interesting sights.
The Maha Myat Muni Paya is a holy pilgrimage site with a huge gold statue of the Buddha. This ancient image of Buddha is one of the most treasured statues in the country.
Another significant attraction of Mandalay is the Shwe Nandaw Kyaung Temple Grounds. It is the only prominent structure from the ancient royal palace which still exists. The monastery is embellished with beautiful carvings and is an example of the grandeur of the old palace.
The Kuthodaw Pagoda is a magnificent site which consists of over seven hundred stone slabs which have the ancient Buddhist scriptures inscribed on them. Built in 1857, it is commonly known as the ‘World’s Greatest Book’ owing to its stone scriptures.
