Bagan is an archaeological city in Myanmar located on the banks of the Ayeyarwady River. It is among the best prehistoric sites in Southeast Asia with above 2000 ancient monuments and various ruins. Today, the city of Bagan is mostly deserted and only a few hotels and religious places remain.
Bagan is typified by a tropical climate which is highly variable. Summers range from warm to hot while winters are dry and cold. Rains vary from moderate to heavy, peaking in June.
Bagan had a thriving population and thousands of grand temples but was reduced to a small settlement after it was invaded by the Mongols. Some of the monuments are still intact but there are no settlements in this region. Bagan is mainly a heritage site today.
