The aboriginals of the Malaya peninsula were a tribe called orang asli who settled here in around 2500 BC. Prior to the arrival of the British in 1786, this peninsula had been under the rule of different kingdoms and countries. It got its independence on 31 August 1957, and the nation of Malaysia was formed in the year 1963.

Malaysia is a colourful country with a diverse culture which is a mix of Islam, Hinduism and Malay customs. However, the customs and traditions of Islam form an integral part of this community’s day to day life. Iban is the largest aboriginal tribe in Malaysia, and a number of cultural practices are influenced by their belief and practices.

The landscape of this country is characterised mainly by coastal plains, hills and mountains covered with dense green jungle, beautiful beaches and so forth. Mount Kinabalu is the highest mountain in Malaysia and is worth visiting.

The country also houses Tanjung Piai, the southernmost tip of the Asian continent. Some of the most popular handicrafts of this country are pewter, woven products, wood carvings, kites etc. The traditional forms of music and dance of this community is acclaimed world over.
