Takayama, a city in Gifu, is located in Japan. The city, known for its high quality timber and skilled carpenters, is situated in the mountainous Hida region and is home to a population of about 96,000 inhabitants.
Takayama has a pleasant climate. Due to its proximity to the mountains, temperatures vary considerably between morning and night. Winters are usually cold and the rainy season begins in June.
The city is believed to have been found during the Muromachi period by Geki Takayama. In 2005, nine towns and villages from the Ono and the Yoshiki districts merged for a major expansion, making Takayama the largest city in Japan.
Takayama is renowned for its carpentry, pottery and furniture. The city is said to be associated with charms, known as ‘sarubobos’, which are passed from one generation to the other.
