Kaghoshima, the capital city of Kagoshima Prefecture, is located on the south-west side of Kyushu Island, Japan. Also known as the ‘Naples of the Eastern World’, Kagoshima has an estimated population of over 605,000 inhabitants.
It has a subtropical climate with a warm weather and high temperatures. The best time to visit is during spring, from April to May, and during autumn, from October to November.
Japan’s industrial revolution is believed to have started in Kagoshima. In 1863, the city was bombarded by the British Royal Navy as a punishment for the murder of Charles Richardson.
Kagoshima is known as the treasury of folk-customs culture. Dance, music, arts and crafts are important cultural elements. Tourism, agriculture and electric power generation are the main sources of economy.
