The Old City is situated inside the modern city of Jerusalem and is divided into 4 quarters known as the Christian quarter, the Muslim quarter, the Armenian quarter and the Jewish quarter.
In 1981 this historical place was included in the list of UNESCO World heritage sites.
The Old City has several important religious structures such as the Dome of the Rock, al-Aqsa Mosque, the Temple Mount and Church of the Holy Sepulchre which are all situated in the 4 areas mentioned above.
In the era of the Kings of Jerusalem, the Old City had 4 gates which later increased to 11, but today, only 7 of these are opened namely; Dung, Lion’s, Zion, Herod’s, Damascus, New and Jaffa.
A gate which is permanently closed is the Golden Gate which is believed was done by the Muslims to prevent the Messiah from entering the city.
