Varkala is small town situated on the coastal region of Thiruvananthapuram district in the state of Kerala in India.
The cliffs running adjacent to the Arabian sea is a unique geological feature as compared to the totally horizontal land of Kerala.
The literacy rate of the Varkala is very high almost above 90%.
Most of the local people are Malayalam speaking and a majority of them can also understand English.
According to 2001 India census the population of Varkala was 42,273. Because of the high literacy rate most of the people are engaged in the service division and also work overseas, precisely in the Middle-East.
Many of the people in Varkala are still chiefly engaged in fishing and also in the small scale industries of boat building.
The climate of Varkala in summers is mainly humid and the temperature rises to a maximum of 35º C. The winters are quite pleasant with the temperature ranging from 22ºC-28ºC.
