The Meenakshi Temple is believed to be the site of the wedding of Lord Shiva and Parvati. The complex of the temple, spread in an area of almost 45 acres and surrounded by 12 towers, is a giant structure.
Lake Potramarai Kulam is an important attraction at the temple and is considered extremely sacred. Another important attraction in the temple is the Aayiram Kaal Mandapam, a hall having 985 pillars that are exquisitely carved and are supposed to be built around the sixteenth century. Other structures in the complex worth seeing are the Ashta Shakti Mandapam, Meenakshi Nayakkar Mandapam, Oonjal Mandapam and Vasantha Mandapam. All these structures have beautiful carvings of the statues of gods and goddesses, which are repaired and painted every 12 years. |
