Kochi is one of the main seaports in the country and has a coastline of 48 kilometers. The city is located at the north region of a peninsula that is 19 kilometers in length and 1.6 kilometers wide.
As the city is close to the equator, the variation in seasonal temperature is less and the level of humidity is moderate to high. The average annual rainfall is 274 centimeters. The average number of rainy days is 132.
As per the census of 2001, the population of Kochi was 5,96,473.
The major religions in Kochi are Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism and Jainism. Thus, Kochi has a multi-cultural and secular environment.
Due to this, the traditional Kerala festivals like Vishu and Onam are celebrated along with North Indian festivals like Diwali and Holi with the same attitude.
