Calcutta, now known as Kolkata, is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. Located on the banks of the Hooghly River, it is a vivacious city famous for its radical history. It is the fourth largest city in India with a populace of about six million people.
Calcutta is represented by a tropical climate wherein summers are long and hot while winters are short and mild. Winters last for a very short while, whereas summers often bring with them spells of thunderstorms. The city experiences heavy rains which bring a relief from the heat.
Calcutta was the capital of India till 1912. The city experienced an economic decline after independence but it bounced back soon during the Indian IT boom. Today, many multinational companies are based here and the city is on its way to progress.
