Although Calcutta is quite safe even for woman travelers traveling alone, you need to be wary of fraud taxi drivers. They try to cheat the foreigners and take advantage of their situation. Sometimes they charge you ten times more than the actual fare. So you need to be careful and always try to take taxi from the pre-paid booths.  

While traveling by train don’t accept help from strangers who pretend to be aggressively friendly. They try to help you arrange your baggage, but once you are momentarily distracted they walk off with your smaller luggage just in a second or two.

So never leave the money bag, purse or wallet, on the seat. You should also avoid all food offered by strangers as it could also be another trap.

Even while visiting the tourist spots you should never be over-friendly with strangers, no matter how helpful they seem to be.
