The Academy of Fine Arts is situated on Cathedral Road close to Victoria Memorial in Kolkata and is open from 3 pm to 8 pm everyday, with the exception of Rabindra Gallery which is open from 12 noon to 6 pm daily.
This Academy has been established by Lady Ranu Mukherjee in 1933 and houses a splendid assortment of sculptures, Indian textiles and miniature paintings as well as the works of contemporary artists exhibited in the art galleries throughout the year.
This Academy comprises of the Rabindra Gallery that consists of the paintings, manuscripts and personal belongings of Rabindranath Tagore (a Nobel Laureate) and there is an Artists Studio that is meant for working artists. On the ground floor there are eight galleries out of which the Textile Gallery comprises of many specimens of hand-woven fabrics like jamewar shawls, benarasi silk, brocade, patola, baluchari and dhakai, the contemporary art gallery comprises of sculptures and paintings in India from 1900 onwards and this is made up of an assortment of Gaganedra Nath Tagore and Acharya Abanindranath Tagore.
