Kandahar is the second largest city in Afghanistan and also the capital of the Kandahar Province. The city is home to a populace of over 4,50,000 inhabitants. A major economic centre of Afghanistan, Kandahar is also the principal city of the native Pashtuns.
Kandahar is characterised by a hot and dry climate. Summers are not so pleasant with temperatures rising as high as 40°C. Monsoon rains begin in January and continue till March. Winters are mild but it is dry throughout the year as the city is situated in a low-lying area.
Kandahar was founded by Alexander the Great in the fourth century. The city grew rapidly due to its strategic location and was made the capital of Afghanistan during the Afghan rule. Today, Kandahar is gradually expanding; its economy consists of trading in food grains, dry fruit, cotton and more.
