Hwange National Park is the largest game reserve in the Southern African nation of Zimbabwe. It is located between Bulawayo (the country’s second largest city) and the famed Victoria Falls.
An unlicensed airstrip (for private chartered aircrafts), scenic luxury bus rides and the daily Bulawayo Vic Falls train provide access to the park.
The 14,600 square kilometre area is typified by an arid climate owing to its location near the edge of the hot Kalahari Desert. The best time to visit Hwange is in the dry season between August and October.
The number of human inhabitants in Hwange is not estimated, but the park does boast of an elephant population of over 20,000 (the largest number in the world). Tourism is the sole revenue generator for Hwange.
