Jinja is a city in south-eastern Uganda. It is located on the shores of Lake Victoria, near the source of the White Nile River. It has an estimated population of 106,000 inhabitants.
Jinja was established by the British in 1901. It served as an administrative centre for the Provincial Government Headquarters for the Busoga region.
Formerly a fishing village, the city has developed into the second largest commercial centre in the country. Along with agriculture, the manufacturing sector forms the backbone of the local economy.
The majority of the population is of Bantu origin.
