Zarzis is a Mediterranean oasis in south-eastern Tunisia. Developed by the French in the late nineteenth century, it is an important tourism centre and a major strategic port.
Owing to the mainly sunny and dry climate, Zarzis is a popular destination for tourists, with average temperatures during the day ranging from 22°C–27°C. In summer, the temperature can rise as high as 40°C. Typical of Mediterranean vegetation, the oasis has around 700,000 trees in olive plantations and more than 100,000 date-palm trees in groves.
The inhabitants of Zarzis number around 110,000. Fishing is an important activity of the locals as observed by the many fishing boats along the coast. Zarzis is also an administrative centre with government offices and a military base on the edge of the town.
