Tataouine is a city located in southern Tunisia. In 1903 a group of nomadic tribes settled in this area and established the city. Today Tatouine has a population of 7 000 inhabitants.
The climate is influenced by the Sahara Desert. The weather is dry and humid with average temperatures of 22C. During the summers, the city experiences harsh, hot Sirocco winds.
Economic activity in this region is centred on agriculture. Over the past few years, Saharan tourism has been contributing greatly to the substance of the population.
The local population is mainly of Berber origin.
