Sidi Bou Said is a small village-town in northern Tunisia. Set up spectacularly on a cliff dominating Carthage and the Gulf of Tunis, it has a population of 5 000 inhabitants.
The village enjoys a pleasant Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Temperatures in July and August can reach 35°C, with up to twelve hours of sunshine per day.
Previously known as Jabal el-Menar, the village derives its name from a famous Sufi saint Abou Said ibn Khalef ibn Yahia Ettamini el Beji who settled in the village in 1207.
Once only a small fishing village, Sidi Bou Said is today an attractive tourist destination.
