Sfax is a Mediterranean port on the Gulf of Gabes, in Tunisia. It has a population of 340,000 inhabitants.
Sfax climate is Mediterranean arid or semi arid. It is characterized by a long period of dry and warm weather followed by a cool winter.
The city was established in 849 AD on the ruins of two ancient settlements -Taparura and Thaenae. Named after the Aazigh leader, Syfax, the city grew as an Islamic trading centre.
Today Sfax is a transportation hub and a major fishing port. It is also an industrial centre for processing phosphates.
Much of the old city walls were damaged during World War 2, yet they stand in good condition today.
