Nefta is an oasis town in central-western Tunisia . It is home to an estimated 30, 000 inhabitants.
The climate in Nefta is soft and dry. The winters are cool at 20C and the summers are hot with sirocco winds blowing across.
Established by the Numidians, Nefta prospered as an important staging-point for caravans. The local economy is based on agriculture and tourism. Nefta is also a centre for the trans-Saharan trade.
Nefta is considered as the spiritual home of Sufism , a mystical branch of Islam. There are 24 mosques in the old quarters and more than 100 zawiyyas (shrines).
