Medenine is located in the south-eastern region of Tunisia. With a population of approximately 61,700 inhabitants, it is a modern and lively town.
The climate of the region is typically Mediterranean, with dry summers and maximum rainfall during winters. Its proximity to the coast ensures that Medenine’s high temperatures are alleviated by the cool sea breeze.
Medenine was already established as an important trading town in the pre-colonial era. Its location made it accessible to traders from North Africa as well as other parts of the Sahara.
The town came into notice during the Second World War when it served as the setting of an unsuccessful German counter attack against the British forces. Today, it is a fairly modern town of Tunisia.
