Kairouan is a city in north-central Tunisia. It is home to approximately 160,000 inhabitants.
The city experiences a semi arid climate with high intensity of rain. The average temperature during summer is from 25-42C, while in winter it is in the range of 5-21C.
Founded in the year 670, Kairouan soon become the third holiest city in Islam, after Mecca and Medina in the medieval period.
Kairouan’s economy is based on livestock, grain, and handicraft. It also relies on tourism.
