South Africa : Health and Safety

Before travelling to South Africa, it is advisable to get vaccination against typhoid, hepatitis A and rabies. A yellow fever certificate is necessary for those travelling from an infected area.

Travellers’ diarrhoea is the most common ailment among tourists; hence, travellers are advised to be careful when eating outside and to drink only bottled or purified water.

Medical facilities across South Africa are pretty good. Obtaining travel insurance is recommended. Also, ensure to carry insect repellents and antibiotics; however, medicines should be carried in their original packaging along with their prescription.

South Africa is prone to high levels of crime; caution should be taken while travelling at night, avoid isolated roads, beaches and hiking trails. Pick pockets are common in crowded areas. Be sure to lock doors and carry your valuables safely.
