Senegal : Health and Safety

Cities like Dakar have good medical facilities; however, these services are limited in other parts of the country. Before heading to Senegal, it is advisable to get vaccinations against yellow fever, cholera, tetanus, typhoid and hepatitis A. Travellers’ diarrhoea is the most common ailment among tourists; travellers are advised to be careful when eating outside and to drink only bottled or purified water.
Also carry sufficient anti-malaria medications and insect repellent. If you are in Senegal in the summer, ensure you drink lots of water to avoid dehydration. Obtaining travel insurance is recommended.
Senegal is a relatively safe country. Just be careful of petty criminals like pickpockets in crowded areas, especially in Dakar.  Avoid the Casamance region, as recent conflict has left the region prone to crime; there is also the threat of landmines in the region.
