Dakar, estimated population more than 2 million inhabitants, is not only Senegal’s
capital city but its administrative, communications, and economic centre, too.
The city is located on the Cap Vert peninsula on the country's Atlantic coast.
Thanks to its strategic position, on western edge of Africa, Dakar is a very
good departure point for trans-Atlantic and European trade and a major regional
port.
Dakar grew up around a French fort built in 1857 after residents moved from
the nearby island of Gorée and in 1902 it replaced Saint-Louis as the
capital of French West Africa.
It was the capital of the short-lived Mali Federation from 1959 to 1960, after
which it became the capital of Senegal.
Today, Dakar is a cosmopolitan city where businessmen and tourists, European
clothes and traditional dress, colonial-style villas and big modern buildings,
new residential areas and the Medina, the old quarter, cohabit in an incredible
mix.
Dakar's international airport is the main stopping point for flights from Europe
to South America.
Dakar is also the finishing point of the world famous Paris Dakar Rally.
