The cuisine is mainly Portuguese with Far Eastern influences. National specialities include piri-piri chicken, Zambesi chicken, shellfish, including Delagoa Bay prawns, matapa (sauce of ground peanuts and cassava leaves) with rice or wusa (stiff maize porridge). The local calamari and ocean-caught game fish are truly enticing.
Maputo’s cafés and pastelarias sell delicious Portuguese-style pastries. Beer is the most popular drink.
