Safi is located in the western part of Morocco along the Atlantic Ocean. This seaside resort town with a population of approximately 284,000 inhabitants is also an important fishing port of the country, especially for the sardine industry.
Safi enjoys a pleasant climate throughout the year. The cool winds blowing in from the ocean keeps the temperatures pleasant. The same ocean helps keep the winters moderate unlike the extreme temperatures in the desert interiors.
For almost a century at the end of the Middle Ages, Safi was under the control of the Portuguese. During the Second World War, the town played an important role in the Anglo-American invasion of the French provinces in North Africa. It was one of the entry points for the invading troops.
