Chefchaouen is located in the northern part of Morocco in the Rif Mountains. This tiny village with a population of approximately 35,700 inhabitants is located at an altitude of 600 m above sea level.
Chefchaouen enjoys a pleasant summer season owing to its altitude with the average temperature at 28°C. Winters are cold and maximum rainfall occurs during this period; the town may also get snowfall occasionally.
The town came up, 500 years ago, when a fortress was built here by the Moors to protect them from Portugese invasion. Tombs of some saints in the vicinity also made it popular with pilgrims.
Chefchaouen literally means horns; the town was thus christened because of the two mountain tops that form the backdrop of the town and resemble the horns of a goat!
