Madagascar : Health and Safety

Before visiting Madagascar, it is advisable to get vaccinations against typhoid, hepatitis A and cholera. A yellow fever certificate is necessary for those travelling from an infected area. It is also recommended that you carry all medical insurance documents while travelling to this region.

Travellers’ diarrhoea is a common ailment among tourists; hence, travellers are advised to be careful when eating outside and to drink only bottled or purified water.

The risk of catching malaria is high, especially in the coastal areas. It is recommended that travellers bring insect repellent and anti-malaria medication. Also carry antibiotics and anti-diarrhoeal drugs, in their original package and along with the prescriptions, as medical facilities in the region are limited.

Madagascar is not prone to violence, but be weary of pickpockets in crowded areas like the markets, airports and bus terminals. Also, avoid travelling late at night.
