Derna or Darnah is located in the northern part of Libya, along the Mediterranean Sea. This peaceful seaside town is home to approximately 81,000 inhabitants.
Derna enjoys a humid Mediterranean climate with temperatures in the summer averaging 30°C. Winter temperatures are much cooler here than in the interior desert region; rainfall occurs at this time of the year.
It was the Battle of Derna, fought in this region around 200 years ago, that put the region on the map. The American troops travelled for 500 miles through the Libyan Desert to capture the city during the first war between the USA and North African states.
This historical site is now a flourishing coastal town flanked by clear waters and beaches on one side and rocky but green mountains on the other side.
