The security in Liberia is still fragile as it continues to recover from years of conflict. Street crimes are on the rise and travellers should avoid venturing out alone. Carrying valuables and visiting desolate areas should also be avoided. Rape and armed robbery are on the rise. Machete-wielding former combatants can be found around poor areas of Monrovia.
Liberia is a high-risk zone for infectious diseases. All travellers must produce a yellow fever vaccination certificate along with the visa application. Swimming in fresh water should be avoided. Water could be contaminated and only boiled water should be consumed. Meningococcal meningitis, sleeping sickness and lassa fever are widespread in rural areas. Travellers are advised to get vaccinated against hepatitis A, B and E. International travellers are strongly advised to take out full medical insurance before departure.
