Mombasa is the second largest city in Kenya. Situated on the Mombasa Island in the Indian Ocean, the city is home to an estimated 900,000 inhabitants.
Mombasa is warm all the year round with temperatures ranging from 20-33C. The dry months are from January-April. The city experiences two wet seasons, with rainfall between April-May and October-November.
Vasco da Gama was the first known European to visit Mombasa; today it is a centre of tourism. Mombasa is also home to Kenya's largest seaport, the Kilindini Harbour. It also has an oil refinery and other industries.
The population is a mix of the local Miji Kenda tribe and people of Arab and Indian origin.
