Main city and capital of Guinea, Conakry is located on Tombo Island and the
Kaloum Peninsula in the west of the country, on the banks of the Atlantic ocean.
Conakry was captured by the French in 1884 and served as the capital of the
French protectorate Rivières du Sud (1891-93) and the French dependency
of Guinea (1893-1958), before becoming the capital of independent Guinea in
1958.
The population of Conakry is difficult to ascertain. Some sources place it as
low as 700,000 others as high as 1.7 million.
Conakry is certainly the leading commercial and industrial centre of Guinea
and one of the major exports is alumina, treated bauxite.
