Serekunda is the largest and most populous town in the country of Gambia. It is located on the mainland near Banjul, in the proximity of the numerous resorts which are situated on the Atlantic shoreline.
It is characterised by a tropical climate, with warm, wet summers and cool, dry winters. November to February is the best months to visit.
The city has a population of approximately 300,000 inhabitants. A typical African town, today, it is a crowded and lively place and is the transport hub of the country. It has grown from a village into a labyrinth of small roads and markets. The city is famous for its markets, wrestling arenas as well as for its cotton silk plants.
